Middle Tech Spotlight Series: Steve Crossan
A conversation with a founding member of AlphaFold, from Google's DeepMind

In the Spotlight: Steve Crossan
Morning, friends - Logan here. Pumped to bring you one of the cooler conversations we’ve had on this podcast…
2 weeks ago, we hosted a special live recording at our recent Lexington AI Meetup with Steve Crossan, one of the original minds behind AlphaFold, the AI that cracked protein folding and changed how we think about drug discovery. Steve started at Google, joined DeepMind before it was cool, and helped lead the team that made a Nobel-level breakthrough in predicting protein structures.
Steve happened to be in Lexington visiting UK Computer Science professor, Brent Seales (June AI Meetup speaker), and we were lucky enough to align one of our AI Meetups with his visit. Such a cool experience all around and we heard great feedback from those that were able to make it to the talk.
If you’re interested in the overlap of biology and artificial intelligence, I think you’ll like this one.
What We Discussed:
The AlphaFold Origin Story – How a weekend hackathon and a simple idea unlocked a leap in protein prediction and transformed bio-AI.
From 45% to 95% – The counterintuitive insight that broke open AlphaFold 2 and changed the trajectory of drug discovery.
The Future of Biotech – What AlphaFold 3 is modeling now and how it’s unlocking faster, cheaper drug development.
Democratizing Frontier Models – Why every major breakthrough gets open-sourced and what it means for startups.
AI Agents as Lab Partners – From molecule generation to virtual R&D teams, why the next great scientists might be bots.
