Middle Tech Spotlight Series: Nymbl Systems
Josh Lau on Nymbl's growth, challenges, and lessons learned from leaving Lexington
June 13th, 2023
Good morning! Welcome to the first edition of the Middle Tech Newsletter.
In a world where you have near-infinite options for newsletters to subscribe to, we want to set the tone early for ours by telling you exactly what you can expect.
Middle Tech has recently launched The Spotlight Series - a renewed interview series where we highlight entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem supporters that are building our startup ecosystem. The series will be very similar to the interviews we've done over the past 4 years - but with more of an emphasis on getting updates from entrepreneurs we've had on in the past. The goal is to show our audience how the ecosystem is evolving and share founders' learnings from building their companies over the years.
You can expect to receive this email anytime we release a new Spotlight Series interview. Let’s dive in!
In the Spotlight: Nymbl Systems
In the latest episode of the Middle Tech Spotlight Series, we sat down with Josh Lau, Founder and CEO of Nymbl Systems, to catch up on some exciting updates about the company’s growth and future plans. Josh originally joined us back in 2019 for episode 62 (!) - to say a lot has changed since then would be an understatement.
When we first had Josh on the podcast, it got a lot of attention because of how candid he was when critiquing Lexington’s startup ecosystem. You can’t grow unless you know what needs to improve, and Josh laid it out very clearly in that episode. Fast forward to today, and the company has moved from Lexington to Scottsdale, and now to Columbus, OH - primarily to take advantage of larger capital networks and more developed business ecosystems.
As the primary purpose of the Spotlight Series is to keep tabs on entrepreneurs we’ve had on in the past, this conversation was primarily focused on the growth of the company, challenges overcome, and plans for the future.
Key Takeaways
1. Insights from Leaving Lexington - We certainly don’t want entrepreneurs to move away from our startup community, but if it can help a founder find success, then it’s necessary. Even though Josh no longer lives here, that hasn’t stopped him from helping founders in this region through advice and intros.
2. Scalable Sales - Now that Nymbl has found product-market fit, Josh has been focused on creating repeatable sales processes to allow his sales team to scale and drive consistent revenue growth.
3. Scaling Horizontally - Having found considerable success managing medical records and practice operations for orthotics and prosthetics offices, Nymbl has become a core system of records for many of these businesses. Because of that, Josh foresees scaling horizontally into the broader home medical equipment (HME) space due to the amount of data flowing through their platform.
