In the Spotlight: Hannah Went & Varun Dwaraka

Hi friends! 👋 Logan here.

For this week’s episode, we dove into the science of aging with our friends over at TruDiagnostic. We originally spoke with Varun back in May of 2023, and after the episode, he sent Evan and I some of their tests to take for ourselves (we completed the tests live, which was probably the most entertaining segment we’ve ever had as Evan almost passed out after pricking his finger for the blood card). In this episode, we discuss some of the results of those tests, while diving into the business behind slowing biological aging.

The Company: TruDiagnostic

TruDiagnostic specializes in epigenetic testing and analysis to measure biological age and aging pace. They provide insights through DNA methylation data, helping individuals and healthcare providers make informed lifestyle and medical decisions to potentially slow, stop, or reverse biological aging.

What We Discussed: Understanding aging via data, Reactive vs Preventative healthcare, and the Longevity Industry

TruDiagnostic leverages partnerships with biotech developers, researchers, and academic institutions to collect and analyze various biomarkers observable in your blood. Large datasets enable them to find correlations between those biomarkers and the subsequent outcomes, allowing individuals and healthcare providers to make lifestyle changes before bad outcomes manifest. As new research around aging has become more mainstream (thanks to pioneers like Bryan Johnson), longevity has now become a hot new industry. TruDiagnostic views their role in this industry as enabling people to make the decisions that can lead to a longer, healthier life.

What You Can Learn by Listening:

  1. How Biological Age is Determined: What’s the science behind all this, anyway? Hannah and Varun walk us through how TruDiagnostic calculates metrics like biological age and aging pace.

  2. Preventative Healthcare is the Future: Our entire healthcare system is built on simply treating Illnesses once they occur. Imagine the shift our society would experience if healthcare providers focused on optimizing our lifestyles to extend our healthy years, rather than just treating our illnesses as they arise.

  3. Longevity for the Masses: We’ve heard the stories of people like Bryan Johnson spending $2m per year to slow his body’s aging process, but what about normal people who want to do the same? Hannah and Varun discuss how they see the space evolving to make it accessible for all.

That’s all we’ve got for you this week! Thanks for reading. Don’t forget to forward if you enjoyed this one!
