In the Spotlight: Buddy Bockweg of Vsimple
Happy Monday, friends. Logan here.
This week, I sat down with Buddy Bockweg, Co-Founder and CEO of Vsimple, for his third appearance on Middle Tech. Buddy was last on for Episode 270 in 2024 and as a company building in the AI space, a lot has changed since then.
Vsimple is an operational intelligence platform built for mid-market companies in manufacturing, distribution, construction, and professional services. The pitch isn't "buy our AI tool." It's the opposite. Buddy's argument is that 99% of companies were built before AI existed and their operations weren't designed for it. You can't bolt AI onto broken processes and expect company-level value. Vsimple helps companies build what Buddy calls the "digital assembly line" - optimizing and automating workflows first, then deploying AI agents on top of that foundation. First workflow done in 30-60 days, full transformation in 12-18 months, then the real AI value follows.
Since his last appearance, Vsimple raised a $7M Series A led by Silverton Partners, relocated headquarters to Louisville, and sharpened their positioning around this idea that process transformation is the unlock for everything else. Buddy also delivered one of the sharper takes I've heard in a while on the "SaaSpocalypse" - why every new model release kills another wave of point-solution software companies, and why the old "put your credit card in, here's 500 templates, good luck" model is collapsing.
What We Discussed
The Henry Ford parallel: 240 to 17 - How the moving assembly line revolution maps directly onto the AI moment, and why the companies that don't retool their operations face the same competitive extinction that wiped out 93% of early automakers.
There is no AI easy button - Why the first investment shouldn't be an AI tool - it should be an operational transformation that connects people, process, systems, and data. AI is step two.
The SaaSpocalypse is real and deserved - Why every new model release eats software companies, and how Vsimple's high-touch, transformation-first model is the opposite of the "please don't ever call us" approach that defined the last decade of SaaS.
Pre-AI vs. post-AI companies - What a company born today looks like versus a legacy business trying to adapt: fewer people, lower overhead, AI-native from day one. One person managing 50 things instead of five people managing 10.
Process is the key that unlocks everything - If you boil Vsimple's entire thesis down to one word, it's process. Build the digital assembly line, optimize and automate, then deploy AI. The unlock isn't replacing people, it's freeing them from five years of low-value work to do what they're actually good at.
