In the Spotlight: Cove

We have a first for Middle Tech this morning. Rather than interview a human for today’s episode, I sat down and interviewed Cove - one of the personalities available through ChatGPT’s new Advanced Voice Mode. This interview is primarily to showcase just how human-like this new advanced voice mode is, as well as some of the capabilities and use cases for the newly released feature. Let’s get into it 👇️ 

The Company: OpenAI

Specifically, ChatGPT’s new advanced voice mode that’s rolled out to all ChatGPT Plus users over the past few weeks.

You’ve likely seen some of the buzz around this new feature - it was first demo’d by OpenAI back in May, which lead to many impatient users when they withheld the new capabilities until last week. You can check out the original demo here, which I highly recommend if you haven’t yet seen it.

What We Discussed:

I basically treated Cove - one of the personalities provided with the new feature - as the guest of the podcast. Together, Cove and I talked through what exactly advanced voiced mode is, showed off some of the more impressive capabilities, and explored potential use cases for using advanced voice mode.

1. What does conversational AI sound like? Sure, we’re all familiar with talking to Siri, Alexa, Cortana, any other voice chat bot, but those are all far from feeling like human conversations. Advanced Voice Mode changes that, setting the stage for new and exciting applications of artificial intelligence.

2. How can I use this in my everyday life? It feels like everyone has caught onto the fact that if you’re not learning how to use AI, you’re likely falling behind. Cove and I discuss a few thought-starters for how to put this new feature to work for you.
