Lexington AI Meetup - June 19th, 2025

How a UK CS Professor used AI to decode a 2,000 year old scroll buried by a volcano

June 2025

Hi friends - Logan here. Coming to you on a Thursday afternoon with an event you won’t want to miss.

For June’s AI Meetup, we’re going to joined by Brent Seales, a computer science professor at the University of Kentucky who led the team that used AI and X-ray imaging to read ancient scrolls buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius - scrolls that haven’t been read in nearly 2,000 years.

He’ll break down how they pulled it off, what it means for the future of machine learning, and the behind-the-scenes story of the $1.5M Vesuvius Challenge he co-founded with GitHub’s Nat Friedman.

It’s also the first in a two-part series we’re hosting for our Summer AI Meetups - Brent’s talk will set the stage for our July guest, Steve Crossan, former DeepMind leader and one of the minds behind AlphaFold.
